Home -> Hanging on a Star -> contents -> Hammer ons and Pull offs-> next page Hammer ons and Pull offsThough I realise that the majority of guitarists reading this will know full well what a hammer on and a pull off is, and how to implement them, I thought it worth stressing their importance, particularly in terms of actually working out the music of Nick Drake. What are they?Hammer ons and pull offs are important in most fingerstlye guitar playing, mainly for the simple reason that it allows the playing of two or more notes of melody to be played within the context of a possibly quite complex and demading fingerpicking pattern, without putting any more work onto the right hand. In the case of hammer ons and pulloffs between an open string and fretted note, it shares the workload out between the two hands, the right hand for example plays the first note (the open string) and then the left hand plays the second note (the 'hammered on' fretted note). The two notes of course can also be played at a far greater speed than one could play them seperately. How to 'Hammer on'Pluck an open string with your right hand [N.B. though hammer ons and pull offs can obviously go between two fretted notes as well as between open strings and fretted notes, the examples contained in this book only do the latter] and immediately fret (at for example, the second fret) the note with a finger of your left hand, but with enough force and velocity to sound the second note clearly. If this is your first attempt at this, you may need to practice this a few times to get it right. How to 'Pull Off'This is pretty much a Hammer on in reverse, but remember, if you're trying this for the first time, pull off, don't lift off. If you simply lift your finger off, the open string will not sound very much (unless possibly, if you had a very sticky finger) - instead pull down as well as lift off, so as to pluck the string away with your finger. How they are notated:
