Hi

Bryter Music have just announced a limited release of Molly's songs for those who are interested.

===

We are pleased to announce the release of a privately-pressed CD plus a collection of poems by Molly Drake, Nick Drake’s mother.

Some of you will be aware of her songs having watched the film A Skin Too Few or having bought the compilation album Family Tree.

It is due the response from this exposure that we feel the time may be right to release some more material.

Molly Drake wrote and performed songs just for herself, her friends and her family. She did not seek publication for them or for her poems, which seem to have been deeply personal observations. Fortunately, for us, her husband made amateur recordings of her songs on tapes that have lain dormant for 60 years.

The sound quality of the recordings reflects their home-made nature as well as the age of the magnetic tape. Though they have been repaired and made listenable to, the recordings have not been over-restored, since we feel that the sound quality is an integral part of this first experience of Molly’s music. The entire recording was engineered by John Wood, Nick Drake’s friend, engineer and co-producer of Pink Moon.

The 19 songs include How Wild The Wind Blows, I Remember, Poor Mum and Do You Ever Remember?

The CD comes with a 70 page booklet containing 45 poems housed in a card portfolio.

It costs £12 including VAT, plus £3 postage and packing in the UK.
Post and packing for Europe is £5, and the rest of the world is £8.

This initial edition is only available here:

Not really. It's a small release aimed at people who like Molly's songs, in response to a positive reaction to the couple of Molly's songs released previously. It's not a big mainstream release.

As I understand it, the estate has no plans to release every last scrap of Nick's recordings. Seems like a reasonable thing to do.

Maybe if we all get behind this they'll do a similar - fans only - realease of what's left of Nick's recordings?

That would stop them getting the few negative reviews they got for Family Tree from the mainstream magazines, who were expecting a 'new Nick Drake album'...

Mine arrived in the post this morning and I've just finished listening to it.

I can honestly say it is achingly beautiful.

The songs (like those of Molly's released previoiusly) are of a wonderful quality. Perhaps because they were never meant to be released, the emotional content is extraordinary.

The simplest way to describe it is to say, it sounds exactly as you would imagine Nick's mum would sound.

I've always thought of Vashti Bunyan as sounding a little like a female Nick Drake and that's the kind of sound Molly has - once you get the Noel Coward vibe out of your head!

The songs themselves cover similar themes to Nick's: nature, love and loss and, as I've said, they have an emotional rawness that's incredible.

After listening to them all, my overall feeling was of an overwhelming sense of sadness in the songs. Which maybe suggests how Nick's emotional state developed? I've never thought his depression was hereditary before, but maybe it was..?

So, on the whole - marvellous. The album stands alone on its quality. I would love it even if it wasn't Nick's mum.

One slight gripe, you have to rip open the packaging to get into it!
