|
|
I'm looking for music by new artists. There are many musical acts that fall into the genre 'acoustic folk', but I have a surprisingly difficult time finding music that is more specifically like Nick Drake's. I think this is really due to the singularity of his artistry, but this forum seems the best place to ask for musical recommendations.
I am specifically looking for new music by artists, like Nick, whose music:
-is mainly acoustic guitar and voice, some minimal arrangements
-focus is mainly on acoustic guitar fingerpicking arrangements
-lacks for the most part the 'rootsy', 'country', or 'bluesy' affectations of most of the musical acts that fall under the 'acoustic folk' genre
Probably no new will come close. Just thought I'd ask for recommendations. THanks. |

| None of any real dimension spring to mind perhaps Jose Gonzalez in a mild kind of way. I'm sure there are more informed peoples on here much more than I that will come up with someone of interest. |

| I suggest looking on Pandora or any other internet radio provider. I have Nicks name in my saved list of artists and it plays songs from similar artists. I have actually stumbled onto some great artists but can't think of them off the top of my head. |

| Josh Tillman, as in Fleet Foxes Josh Tillman? If so he is a great singer/guitar & drums player but I'm not familiar with his solo stuff or projects he was involved with before FF. Great band, saw them in Hollywood last May. |

I think there are quite a few these days! I particularly like Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Kings of Convenience. Also Ben Howard, James Vincent McMorrow, Kathryn Williams, Laura Marling etc. _________________ I have stolen a man

Oh there are so many people that sound like they sound like nick drake that
it may soon become hard to find someone that does not sound like Nick Drake. That's how these things go..... give it a hundred years and maybe someone will decide what is real....? |

Yes he did a couple of solo projects, the latest "a year in the kingdom" (2009) which I recommend. |

Fortunately, only Nick Drake really sounds like Nick Drake.
A fellow at Art school one said to a tutor in haste to an upcoming painting project "I think i'll do a Constable for this one" to which the reply was "I think Constable did Constable well enough, there's no need to repeat him"

| Come on folks......there is no one like Nick....!!!!!!.......but on this side of the pond, there are a few performers that i do enjoy: Fleet Foxes, M. Ward, Elliott Smith (he is awesome and also unique and also died young), Bon Iver, Ray La Montagne, The Weepies, Fionn Regan (he's Irish) and i absolutely love Suzanne Vega (check out her "Close Ups" series........i am sorry, but i just don't get the buzz about Kathryn Williams.......i was not at all impressed by her performances of two of Nick's songs in the "Under Review" documentary.......i mean, if it is the soft, mellow voice that is impressive, check out Vashti Bunyan.......for older performers, definitely check out Jackson C Frank.......i mean, he was a big inspiration to Nick. |
