There was some activity on this around 3 years ago with claims that a pristine copy of the Peel session tape had been discovered:

There was talk of negotiations to release them at the time.. I don't know whether there's a moratorium on new Nick releases, whether they feel the barrel has been scraped enough with things like Family Tree, but if it's true that these sessions do exist on tape then it's a shame that fans don't get to hear them.

I think there's room for one more disc to complete the archives, Nick Drake 'in session' with these 2 BBC recordings (which would be something around 12 tracks) maybe coupled with a couple of selections from that Caius College live tape, if anything from it is releasable - I believe the percieved quality of the performance was the stumbling block with that one.

I am nonplussed and don't know whether or not these are complete hoaxes or perhaps may have some credence.

They sound legitimate; but it is easy to sound legitimate; and quite a bit is to be gained by the random posting of such notices.

No, i'm quite sure the Elliot thing was scuppered by the estate but am quietly confident that the JP session does exist in it's entirety.
Put it this way, if it were me working for the BBC, and i'm sure there was or still is a like minded soul there, somewhere, then i'd have made damn sure that at least a copy survived.

Well, there's some consolation - mainly due to the publication of Jason's book, The Pink Moon Files; it's revealed that the two other tracks from the Aug '69 session do, in fact, exist in full in this home-recorded version.

The guy who recorded it let just a handful of tapes out containing only '...Reply' and 'Hours' back in the late-nineties for review purposes. The two other tracks are simply not circulating (yet)...

All this information was included in only the 1st hardback edition of Patrick Humphries' biography in 1997; it was subsequently removed from all future editions for reasons we can only guess at, although Humphries did give the guy's full name.

So it seems the chap is still sat on them. Who knows...there may even be some of the dialogue between Nick and John Peel present on the tape but that is, alas, pure speculation.

It seems not...

There are several 'Nightride' John Peel shows from '68/'69 circulating, virtually all of which feature Peel talking with whoever is in session that evening. I have the May 7th show which includes Ivor Cutler and on listening carefully you can hear that it 'switches' to Ivor's session track once him and Peel stop chatting.

Further to that, in Tim Clements' BBC doc from 1999, one of the Island Record guys (name escapes me at present, sorry) recalls Nick appearing on John Peel's show and Peel talking to Nick.

It would appear that the proceedure for this show was to pre-record the tracks a day before and then attend the live broadcast - there's probably documentation somewhere that backs this up.

The writer Iain Sinclair appeared on the same show with Nick. He writes a short piece about it in London: City Of Disappearances' (Hamish Hamilton books, 2006). And, yep, Iain DID have his own tape of the show but lost it!
