| Its weird, because before I ever heard Nick Drake, I searched his name on Limewire (a Napster like program) and that song came up. I listened to it, compared it to a couple other songs I downloaded and thought they sounded so different. Thankfully I found out it wasn't him, but it just seemed odd to see this post and my experience. |

I have an website dedicated to Nick (in portuguese) and there's always someone asking me if it's Nick who's singing that song, if he had really covered it.
I'd like to know when this legend began and who created it. |

I think we can consign this particular rumour to the dustbin, along with the "Jimmy Page played the acoustic guitar parts on Five Leaves Left" story.
But is it true that Charlie Drake (well known UK slapstick comedian who died recently) was Nick's real dad?

Jimmy Page ??? your joking in 1968/69 jimmy couldnt have laced (or zipped as nick prefered zip) Nicks boots.
If you listen ooh so carefully you will see Nick Drake was/is the master of the acoustic guitar. Jansch and Davy Graham are the onl;y contemporaries that were on a par with Nick. Jimmy page is undoubtably a great guitarist but the boring pop orientated session work he did is not a patch on the guitar playing of nick drake.
Drake to the acoustic is what hendrix is to the electric, the GOD.

I wouldn't be surprised if the source for this rumour comes from another rumour. Donovan recorded the album Hurdy Gurdy Man in 1968. One of the guitarist on that album is Jimmy Page, while the rumour is that also the later-to-be-famous-in-small-circles jazz-guitarist Allan Holdsworth played on the title-track. It is even mentioned in the liner notes of Troubadour - The Definitive Collection. But the man himself denies it every time though. |
