Here's a description of the photograph and the people in it from a 1997 article in The Telegraph by Mick Brown.

"There is a photograph taken in 1967, of Drake on a visit to Hatley Park, the home of the Astor family in Cambridgeshire. The Hon. J.J. Astor, Mrs Astor and friends ride in a horse-drawn cart, their faces turned to the camera in broad smiles. Drake sits in the front seat, his face turned away, as if he is not quite part of the group."

You can read the complete article 'The Sad Ballad of Nick Drake" here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/4709629/The-sad-ballad-of-Nick-Drake.html

Nick is wearing the same style of clothing (probably the very same clothes) he wore in France in early 1967 and in the photos for Five Leaves Left.

Although the biographical details in the article are now well known to Nick's fans, at the time almost nothing had been written about him. Mick did a good job of researching and conveying events with sensitivity and insight.

BTW, in the article, Mick Brown refers to "Been Smoking Too Long" as a traditional blues. I had only recently contacted the record label and Joe Boyd to let them know it was mine, so very few people were aware of that.

Mick Brown is a remarkable writer. His "The Dance of 17 Lives" is an extraordinary and fascinating look at Tibetan religious politics. Check out his biography of Phil Spector which came out last year - a very compelling and disturbing biog.

I've never seen this picture before either. Thanks so much for posting it, as all newly discovered pictures/music/articles regarding Nick are indeed "Rare...rare finds."

Good find joenzi. Speaking of rare photo's, I came across a photo a while ago of Nick reading the back of a Fairport convention LP. Can't remember where I saw it and haven't been able to find it anywhere since. Does anyone know of this photo? I think it was taken in the reception at sound techniques but I could be wrong.

It's in the photo section of Joe Boyd's book "White Bicycles".

Thanks Stuart. I've always wondered about that photo. I seem to remember it gives you a good idea of the size of his hands, much like the one here.

Never seen that pic before, very nice!

In the other pic mentioned, Nick is looking at the back of Fairport Convention's Full House LP in the Witchseason office.
