| I've noticed people talk about Nick and driving pretty often but i've never heard anything about what kind of car he had. Does anyone know? I couldn't really imagine Nick ever owning anything like a Ford pickup at least... |

In the book "white bicycles" (can't remember who wrote it) they all travelled down the old hippy route in a Ford Escort.
At home, Nick used to drive around in Molly's Morris Minor frequently running out of petrol as he never used to put any in himself. |

I reckon a blue Ford Cortina is the best bet!
Maybe a bit like this (but blue)
|
Think Nick could drive a car in any of the following colours:
Black Dog Black
Pink Pink Pink Pink
or
Way Too Blue
Yes, OK, I'll get back to work now |

Way Too Blue is my favorite!
I'm not too surprised by the Ford Cortina, though I am for the Morris Minor a bit. |

| In Frozen Light Colin Betts says Nick and friends drove a dark-blue Mark One Ford Cortina to Aix. |

The Humphries book mentions him driving a Vauxhall Viva !
And there has also been mention of him driving his Mum's Morris Minor ........
But also a Cortina was mentioned re the overseas driving. |

I haven't tried to see if it is accessible online but in the June 2009 edition of Mojo magazine on page 68 there is a photo of Nick and Gabrielle standing by an automobile whose make I am unable to identify and I'm wondering if someone in the UK can help me out. Going by the ages of Nick and Gabrielle in the photo I would say it was taken around 1954 but search as I might I cannot find photos of anything on the internet that permits me to identify this car. I remember reading that Rodney had a Humber -- if the assertion is correct -- but this car does not seem to be that because there are no horizontal grill elements. Nor does it seem to be an Austin Morris Rover Wolseley Riley Hillman … well hey I just did find it and it appears to be a Rover P4 90. Let me know if I am mistaken.
These according to Wikipedia were produced from '53- '59. The reason I didn't find out until looking today is that I had looked at Rovers that were too old i.e. prior to '53.
I don't suppose Nick ever drove this one though.
I much like cars and like to drive and the fact that Nick liked driving represents in my estimation a positive quality. In 1964 when I was 13 my geography teacher gave me a book "All the Worlds Automobiles" and it was there I first learned about Daimlers. Ever since then I have always wanted one. As a matter of tongue-in-cheek criticism the Drakes most certainly were amiss to not have had a Daimler. I think their plum pudding recipe may also have been wanting. |
