I think Nick knew that fame was all too fleeting. His lyrics and style were and still are haunting, deep and at the same time understated. Nothing about him is confrontational or "dumbed-down" like the current menagery of musicians. I was very young when he died, but through his music I feel like he as an old friend. Everytime I listen to him Im a little sad I wasnt there to see him play.
